REVEALING PLACE
Carnegie Mellon University, 2013
Students from Carnegie Mellon University, The University of Missouri, and St. Edward's University were asked to use the camera to engage and explore themes that are cultural barometers of their respective communities. Seeking out groups, phenomena, and locations, they document widely varying subject matter. The photographers uncover for us the surprise of the unknown and at times offbeat.
Project locations were selected to give a look at a range of American places: Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, a northeastern Rust Belt city working to reinvent itself as it emerges from a more industrial past; the University of Missouri in Columbia, a Midwestern university town located between Kansas City and St Louis; and St. Edward's University in Austin, Texas, a high-tech boomtown in the South Central region.
The students' projects range widely and include subjects such as subterranean businesses, communities affected by hydraulic fracking, and the life of an exotic dancer. The photographers' combined efforts join to provide a telling snapshot of the United States at this moment in history.
